When a person uses an *Offgrid toilet, gravity directs urine to immediately flow off the front of the conveyor belt. Solid waste lands on the conveyor belt in the “toilet bowl.” The user “flushes” by pumping the foot pedal to move the conveyor belt. Poo and toilet paper is transported up the conveyor and deposited into the decomposition vault.

Urine diverted by the conveyor toilet is funneled underground and dispersed into the land via a corrugated drain pipe, similar to a leach field. This is determined by the soil percolation rate of where the toilet will be installed.

The solid waste scrapes off the conveyor belt and drops into the decomposition vault. From there, since poo is 80% water, it begins to dehydrate immediately (thanks to diverting the urine!). Local microorganisms found in the soil work to turn solid waste into organic matter over the course of a few months. The primary goal is to create a chamber where ‘nothing can get in’ and ‘nothing can get out.’ We offer a robust vault option that is included as a component of the *Offgrid Trailhead building.

Designed to accompany the *Offgrid toilet, the structure nests together the above components to create a seamless sanitation solution. Users will only see the white toilet seat since the conveyor belt sits behind the back wall where a maintenance hatch protects the decomposition vault.
